[Summer in Fukuoka] How to enjoy fireworks
Japan offers different charms in every season, but summer is especially dazzling—just like fireworks lighting up the sky.
Beyond the grand firework festivals held across the country, there are also many other summer activities worth experiencing.
Many visitors to Japan may have seen handheld fireworks for sale in supermarkets, but without knowing where or how to use them, they end up missing out on the fun—what a pity!
So in this post, we’ll guide you through how to enjoy fireworks safely and legally in Fukuoka!

📍Where to Buy Fireworks?
Daiso
Daiso usually sets up a fireworks section during the summer, offering handheld fireworks and small sets at affordable prices. If you've just rented a yukata, the Shopper store in Tenjin is a convenient stop to pick up some fireworks.
Don Quijote (Donki)
If you're looking for more variety, Donki is a great option. Most branches (e.g., Tenjin, Nishijin, Nakasu) carry fireworks year-round, and their summer selection expands to include handheld, fountain-type, and large set fireworks. They even carry cute character-themed fireworks, like Chiikawa—perfect for photos!
Large Supermarkets
If there’s no Daiso or Donki nearby, you can also check supermarkets like Aeon, Sunny, or Seiyu. From June to mid-August, they usually have a seasonal fireworks section, mainly offering sets great for families or small groups.
🎇Where to Play Fireworks?
📍シーサイドももち海浜公園
If you’ve been to Fukuoka, you may already be familiar with this spot—it’s the beach located right next to Fukuoka Tower, known as Seaside Momochi Beach Park. Only about 15 minutes from the city center by W1, 301, or 302 bus, this beach is easily accessible and well-equipped.
One of its biggest advantages? It has public trash bins, so you can dispose of used fireworks and trash on the spot without needing to bring it back to your hotel—super convenient!
To ensure everyone's safety and enjoyment, please follow these rules:
Only safe handheld fireworks are allowed.
Fireworks must be used on the beach, and only until 10:00 PM each night.
The use of aerial fireworks (打ち上げ花火), rocket fireworks (ロケット花火), loud explosive fireworks (爆音), and firecrackers (爆竹) is strictly prohibited.
All garbage and leftover fireworks must be cleaned up by yourself.
Please also prepare a bucket of water to safely extinguish fireworks.
Smoking and loud behavior are not allowed in the area—let’s respect others and keep the environment peaceful and clean.
⚠️ Tips for a Fun & Safe Fireworks Night
Go during the daytime or early evening to scout the area while it’s still bright.
Bring a windproof or long lighter—they're safer and more convenient, especially near the sea where it’s breezy.
Don’t forget a bucket and trash bags to prevent fire hazards and clean up afterward.
If carrying a bucket feels troublesome, you can purchase a firework extinguisher bag (花火消火袋/はなび消火袋), which is commonly available at 100-yen shops like Daiso during the summer. Simply add a little water to the bag—it’s a safe, eco-friendly way to put out used fireworks, especially handy for travelers!
